WSSP’s waste collection operations faced challenges due to the lack of real-time visibility into bin fill levels and field activity. Fixed collection schedules and manual monitoring often led to missed pickups, overflowing bins, and inefficient routing of collection vehicles.
Under the Civic Innovator Program, a student team from Iqra National University developed an IoT-based Smart Waste Management System that combined sensor-enabled bins with a digital monitoring platform. Ultrasonic sensors measured bin fill levels, while GSM modules transmitted data to the cloud. A web and mobile dashboard allowed WSSP officials to view live bin status, locations, and alerts, supporting more informed and responsive operations. GPS-based tracking also enabled route optimization for collection vehicles.
The solution was prototyped in consultation with WSSP stakeholders and refined based on operational feedback. By introducing real-time data into waste operations, the system showed strong potential to support more efficient collection planning, faster response to empty bins, and improved overall service management.
